On 1 January 2021 Norway joined the UN Security Council as elected member for the period 2021-22.

On 1 January 2021 Norway joined the UN Security Council as elected member for the period 2021-22. Norway has joined the Security Council with high ambitions and a strong confidence in what a non-permanent member and small state can bring to the table. Four thematic priority areas have been identified as particularly important to Norway during its membership period:

  • Peace diplomacy;
  • Inclusion of women;
  • Protection of civilians (including children); and
  • Climate change and security.

Dialogue Forum for Norway's membership in the United Nations Security Council 2021-2022

To strategically strengthen the goal of a knowledge-based foreign policy in relation to the Norwegian membership in the United Nations Security Council, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in cooperation with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and the Peace Research Institute Oslo (ÌÇÐÄÍøÒ³°æ), are organizing a series of thematic roundtable meetings in 2021 and 2022.
