I am a Political Scientist researching the impacts of critical events such as conflict, climate extremes and displacement on local communities and development. My doctoral project investigated how displacement can impact host community perceptions of the legitimacy of political institutions, unrest dynamics and community cohesion, using both quantitative spatial analysis and qualitative interviews.

As World Refugee Day 2026 is being marked, it is worth pointing to the strong foundations that exist based on research, which can inform policy at a time when humanitarian needs are pressing, while border control practices lead to migrant deaths.
Eirin Haugseth has today defended her PhD thesis: 'Displacement and discontent. Consequences of displacement on local host communities' at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Sociology and Political Science.
Gudrun Østby and Sebastian Schutte are replacing Scott Gates as Editors-in-Chief of the journal, while Juliane Stötter replaces Bertrand Lescher-Nuland as Managing Editor.
